Just starting the strip down and cleaning of one of our client 94 Defender. It looks like the fire started in the engine bay; possibly the alternator and or alternator wiring may have been the culprit!
Will keep you up to date with pictures as the rebuild progresses…..

So Paul, what are we missing at this juncture in order to go full speed ahead? Decisions, parts, space @ the local body shop? What issues exist at this point that we need to review, if any? Happy with progress or are there hiccups that we did not anticipate? What is the condition of the fire wall now that we can see it fully? Mitch

Hi Mitch, Fire wall looks OK but we can't be sure until we have striped the last of the dash and A/C system from inside the D90, allowing us to inspect it fully. One thing to consider as we have the engine out and have removed the clutch, is if you want to replace the clutch? no labor cost involved just the part content. It has no fire damage, but shows some wear. It will work fine for some while but as it only costs $300.00 to do now as opposed to $1000.00 later it might be worth doing. I have ordered the s/steel brake lines which will be here in plenty of time. Looking forward to getting the body off and to the paint shop.

Though we see smoke damage on the interior firewall, where do we stand on the quality of the metal & its strength? As to your clutch question, let's do it right and invest the 300$. Next question? Best. Mitch

I have just purchased a mobil Sand Blaster which I intend to use to get rid of the rust. This will allow us to really clean it up and check all the seams etc. and make sure everything is good. We'll do that when the body comes off. A wise choice on the clutch purchase . All the best. Paul

I was in the shop today and took a look at the project. It is so cool how a defender can be disassembled like a big buch of leggos.
